چکیده

Cold storage is a valuable method for reducing the cost of producing large amounts of biological agents. Fluctuating thermal regimes (prolonged exposures at low temperatures combined with periodic short higher temperature) are reported to improve cold survival and fecundity in some parasitoid species. In this study, the pupal stage of the parasitoid wasp Lysiphlebus fabarum (Marshall) (Braconidae: Aphidiinae), within mummies of Aphis fabae were stored for a period of two weeks at 6±1°C (50–60% RH, L14:D10 photoperiod), and the mating behavior of emerging adults and fitness of their progeny were compared under fluctuating thermal regime (2 h daily at 21°C) versus constant low temperature. Results revealed that the males emerging from fluctuating temperature regime, in contrast to constant temperature treatment, were not significantly different from the control males in odour recognition, walking speed, and number of mating success. Moreover, the fitness of the first generation progenies (percent parasitism, percent adult emergence and sex ratio) was not influenced by cold storage under fluctuating temperature treatment. Our results confirmed that cold storage of L. fabarum pupae under fluctuating regime is a protection method when compared to constant low temperature exposure.

The host-stage preferences of alfalfa black aphid, Aphis craccivora, by parasitoid wasp, Lysiphlebus fabarum, were studied under two trials under growth chamber conditions (55±5 %, R. In the first trial, all stages of aphid in equal ratios, and in the second trial, variable ratios of 5:15, 15:15 and 15:5 of 3rd and 4th instar nymphs were used for parasitisa...

Ecology of seed dormancy and germination of Carex divisa Huds.: Effects of stratification, temperature and salinity

Carex divisa is a patrimonial rhizomatous species and acts as an important component of grazed wet permanent grassland on the French Atlantic coast. This study treated three storage regimes (wet-cold, dry-cold and dry-warm), burial in soil, fluctuating temperature and salinity on seed germination of C. divisa. The seeds were dormant at maturity. No seed germinated after 2 and 6 weeks of dry sto...

The effect of development time on the fitness of female Trichogramma evanescens

Trichogramma are facultative gregarious egg parasitoids that attack a wide range of lepidopterous eggs. Because hosts in which parasitoids develop vary in terms of available food, the progeny produced by parasitoid females vary in size and fitness. While one might expect that the developmental rate and emergence rhythm should be similar for all individuals reared under the same environmental co...

Ant Mimicry by an Aphid Parasitoid, Lysiphlebus fabarum

In Iran, Lysiphlebus fabarum (Marshall) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) is a uniparental parasitoid of the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae Scopoli (Hemiptera: Aphididae), that possesses various highly evolved adaptations for foraging within ant-tended aphid colonies. Direct observations and video recordings were used to analyze the behavior of individual females foraging for A. fabae on bea...
